Wireless Networking

Setting up a wireless network is an ideal way of sharing devices (printers, internet connections etc) between multiple computers without the need to run cables around your house or office.  The transmission range of wireless devices means that it is practical to locate different equipment in different parts of the house - for example, a home/work computer in one room and a children's computer in a different room (playroom or bedroom).

However, the transmission range has significant security implications and could provide access to your systems to your neighbours or even someone sitting in their car on the street with a laptop.

Setting up a wireless network

The majority of home users would be capable of setting up a wireless network simply by following the instructions that come with the equipment.  It will work, but be highly insecure.

Why is security important?

Wireless routers (the devices which are the "heart" of your wireless network) use default setups when they are switched on.  Most users never change the defaults.  This makes it very easy for someone with a relatively small amount of knowledge to connect to your wireless network.  (The concept of driving around a neighbourhood searching out wireless networks has become known as "war-driving").

This means anyone can:

  • reconfigure your network, preventing your computers from accessing the internet

  • use your internet connection to surf the net and download file

But why would anyone do this?  Firstly, it enables people to surf the internet (courtesy of you) without them having to subscribe to an internet service provider.  Secondly, persons with malicious intent often have no real motive other than being destructive. (Why do virus writers right viruses?)

Implications of poor security

In extreme cases the consequences can be very serious indeed.  Suppose someone used your wireless network to download illegal material from the internet.  Your internet service provider will trace the downloads to your network, leaving you facing potentially serious charges, with no evidence to prove it was not you.

What to do next?

Setting up a secure wireless network can be a complex task, not suited to the average home or home office user.  Yet for someone with experience your wireless network can usually be made secure in under an hour.  A small price to pay for peace of mind.  Please call for further details.
